Trawling ban “destroyed an entire industry” threatens future of Blumar’s Pacific Blu and Landes

“There are no winners here”, CEOs tell IntraFish about the Chilean government’s decision to implement a ban on mid-water trawling for cuttlefish. All industrial fishing companies operating in the fishery, Blumar’s subsidiary Pacific Blu, Pesquera Landes, Pesquera Alimar, and Pesquera San Lazaro, with a combined cuttlefish trawling fleet of seven vessels, had to tie up their boats when the new law came into force.

Pesquera Landes’ CEO Andrés Fosk agrees that there is no benefit whatsoever from implementation of the ban. “You can’t operate a plant relying only on the catch from small vessels, the organization is bad and the supply is insufficient and discontinuous,” Fosk said.
